Land Rover . How to Troubleshoot the Steering System in a Pontiac Grand PrixPontiac has applied the name Grand Prix to a number of models since it first produced the car in 1962. It has used the name for full-sized, luxury and mid-sized models. Since 2004 Pontiac has offered the Grand Prix as a mid-sized 4-door sedan. Those models are easy to service under GM's new Maintenance schedules, but you can also troubleshoot steering system problems on your own. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Step by Step : 1 Have the steering system serviced at least every two-years (the oil light should go off annually to remind you of scheduled service). Inspect the suspension and steering components for damaged, loose or missing parts or for signs of wear. Check the power steering lines and the hoses for proper hook-up, leaks, binding and cracks. 2 Lube your steering every 7500 miles. This will also allow you to check the connections to make sure they are properly adjusted. 3 Inspect your power steering fluid with every oil change. Keep it clean, level and free from air. If you do find aeration or contamination, you will need to replace it. 4 Align your front end annually and make sure to rotate and balance your tires. Make sure the pressure is even and replace worn tires in pairs. If you regularly maintain your linkage, fluid and tires you should keep your car steering straight. If you still encounter problems, you will need to look at other system components. 5 Check the steering gear and gearbox to make sure the connections are lubricated and the parts move freely. Make sure the mounting struts are secure. If you have difficulty turning the steering wheel, you should also check the power steering pump pressure. 6 Look outside your steering system as well. Steering problems can be caused by sticking brakes, worn shocks and springs, wheel bearings and ball joints.
Land Rover . How to Troubleshoot the Steering System in an Oldsmobile AleroThe Oldsmobile Alero replaced the Cutlass as Oldsmobile's compact offering. The Alero entered production in 1998 and was the last car sold under the Oldsmobile brand. If you aren't ready to move on and intend to keep your Alero on the road until it dies, you will want to pay special attention to the steering system. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Power steering fluid Step by Step : 1 Rotate your tires every 15,000 miles. Make sure they are balanced, in good condition and the pressure even. Make sure the wheels are aligned. Wheel wear and alignment cause many common steering problems. 2 Top off your power steering fluid if levels drop. Use power steering fluid only, not automatic transmission fluid. Check the belt for slippage and the line for leaks or loose connections. Replace your fluid if you find signs of contamination or air. 3 Service the steering system to make sure the linkage is in good condition, properly lubricated and the connections properly adjusted. You should check at least every 30,000 miles. If you stay on top of linkage, fluid, and wheels you should keep your steering system in good working order. Should problems occur, you can look for solutions elsewhere in the system. 4 Look for simple problems that can affect steering. Check to see if you are overloading your car or if something is interfering with the tires. 5 Check the power steering gear parts to make sure they are lubricated and working. You may also need to adjustment the gearbox or replace it altogether. You should also make sure your power steering pump is providing enough pressure to the system and that it isn't loose or rattling. 6 Inspect your brakes to make sure they aren't dragging. You may need to replace the caliper, the master cylinder or the rotors and drums. If you problem persists, check wheel bearings, shocks, and springs. *For Vehicles With fuel injection 1. Try cranking the engine while someone sprays fuel injector cleaner into the throttle body. If the engine starts and then dies, it's a fuel problem. If the engine cranks without firing, it's an ignition system or compression problem. 2. If the engine did start with fuel injector cleaner, find out whether the fuel pump isn't pumping fuel or the computer isn't triggering the fuel injectors. 955

Look down the carburetor barrel and push the accelerator pump arm. Is fuel squirting into the venturi? If so, then the float bowl is full, but it still may not be getting a fresh supply of fuel when it needs it. 2. Disconnect the fuel pump end of the hose that leads from the carburetor to the fuel pump (see Figure 21-2) and place the end of the hose in ajar or plastic bag. If you don't have anything to put the hose in, forget this entire procedure. Never let gasoline run onto the ground. It's flammable and toxic to the environment. Also, be sure not to let gasoline run out of the hose onto your clothes or the engine. And if it's very hot, fan the area to disburse the fumes. Somewhere along that line is the fuel filter. The filter could have jammed — especially if it hasn't been changed in ages. Land Rover . What is the best day to go to the Detroit Auto Show?
Nissan Armada. * Figure 21-2: A hose runs from the fuel To fuel tank pump to the carburetor. To carburetor 3. Bump the starter and see whether gasoline squirts out of the hose. If it does, then your fuel filter and fuel pump are probably all right. If nothing comes out of the hose, you probably have either a plugged fuel filter, a defective fuel pump, or a broken fuel line — or you're out of gas. 4. Try to eliminate the fuel filter as the villain by removing it (Chapter 13 tells you how) to see whether gas comes out of the hose. If you changed the filter recently, ignore this step and look under the rear end of the car to see whether fuel is leaking from a broken fuel line. .Chapter 21: What to Do If Your Car Drops Dead or Won't Start Fire If your engine is getting enough air and fuel, you're probably having ignition system trouble. As I explain in Chapter 4, the "fire" is really electric current that's stored in the battery, replaced by the alternator, amplified by the coil and, in some vehicles, directed by a distributor to each spark plug. (Newer vehicles have distributorless ignition systems — Chapter 5 has the details.) If something along the way goes wrong and the spark fails to reach the plugs, all the air and fuel in the world won't produce combustion in the cylinders, and the vehicle won't go. Because the engine was running before it died, it's probably not the fault of the battery, solenoid, or starter, which brings you to the distributor cap — assuming that your vehicle has one. If you have a distributorless system, you'll need professional help to check it out. Checking the distributor cap Land Rover . How do you start a diesel engine that has been sitting for six years?

Check the cable that runs from the distributor cap to the coil to be sure that it, too, is secure. How about the smaller wires that come out of the coil? Because many cars now have high-energy ignition systems that operate at 47,000 volts or higher, pulling a distributor or spark plug cable to test for a spark is unsafe. If your car has an electronic ignition system, the ignition module may have gone bad. If you have an electronic ignition system or a distributorless ignition system, skip the rest of the checks in this section. If your car has a non-electronic ignition system, follow the instructions in Chapter 12 to remove the distributor cap and look at the points. Do they open and close when you bump the starter? If not, adjust them so that they do and try to start the car again. If there's still no action, your points could be oxidized or fouled by a bit of grease or oil. Bump the engine so that the points are closed, and insert the tip of a screwdriver, nail file, matchbook cover, or feeler gauge between them to rub the point surfaces and eliminate the oxidation or dirt. If you still can't get the engine to turn over, move on to the next section. Replacing the rotor, condenser, and points If you've kept your old rotor, points, and condenser in the trunk of your car because they were still working when you replaced them during a tune-up, you can use these parts to try to find and correct your problem. First, following instructions in Chapter 12, try replacing the rotor with the old one. If that doesn't work, replace the condenser. If that doesn't work, replace the points. Don't worry about adjusting the point gap; as long as the points open and close, the engine will run. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies. I've been told that the most frequent cause of engine failure on vehicles with old-style, non-electronic distributors is improper lubrication of the cam when the points were changed. Because of this, the little rubbing block gets worn down, and then, even when the block rests on the cam lobe, there's not enough surface to force the points apart. That's why, if you have a nonelectronic ignition system, it's important to check your dwell every 5,000 miles and replace points at every tune-up (see Chapter 12 for instructions). If you've checked everything out and your vehicle still won't go, you're probably going to have to wait for help. Sometimes part of your engine has given out. Sometimes it's the transmission. If that's the case, you may be saying good-bye to Old Faithful. On the bright side, you usually have plenty of warning before a car gives up the ghost. Of course, if you haven't checked and maintained your vehicle properly — if you've ignored the warnings, the knockings, the smoke from the tailpipe, the hesitations and the other symptoms I cover in Chapter 20 — well, you asked for it. Here's how to help your vehicle regain its cool: At the first sign of overheating, shut off your air conditioner and open your windows. Doing so decreases the load on the engine and helps it cool off. If you continue to overheat, turn on the heater and blower. Doing so transfers the heat from the engine to the interior of the car. (This does wonders for your overheated engine but very little for you!) If you're stopped hi traffic and the temperature gauge is rising, shift into Neutral and rev the engine a little. Doing so makes the water pump and the fan speed up, which draws more liquid and air through the radiator. The increased air and liquid circulation helps cool things off. Try not to ride your brakes. Crawl along slowly, on little more than an idle, rather than moving up and then braking repeatedly. Brake drag increases the load on the engine and makes it heat up.
